What is the Youth Empowerment and Policy Project?
The Youth Empowerment and Policy Project (YEPP), established in 2001, involves Maine's youth from high schools and colleges throughout Maine in the effort to decrease underage drinking. They do this by working to change factors in the social, legal, economic and political environments that encourage, enable or support underage drinking.
The philosophy of YEPP is to involve youth in the discussion about the underage drinking because it is a problem affecting the youth population. By involving youth, we have a chance to look at the issues together.
The YEPP group is an active, diverse group of students from around the state of Maine trained in public speaking, facilitation, and policy issues.
YEPP members incorporate their perspectives and experiences in the development and implementation of Findings and Recommendations about drug and alcohol policy. The group has developed several notable findings and recommendations regarding school drug and alcohol policy, enforcement of underage drinking laws, and alcohol advertising and its effects on underage drinking.
