UNIVERSAL WELLNESS PROGRAM for MAINE
Effective July 1, 2009
Making Maine the Healthiest State
Chronic illness costs private insurance $350M each year - and much of it is
preventable. Making Maine the healthiest state lowers health care costs and
improves quality of life.
The Universal Wellness program will help every Mainer know, understand and take action to reduce your risk for chronic illness.
How will it work? Know Your Health Risks - Complete a free, confidential web
based health risk review Take Action to be Healthier - After completing the review,
you’ll be linked to local resources available to help you.
(In Phase 1, we will focus on tobacco cessation; physical activity, nutrition and
obesity. Phase 2 will add substance abuse.)
Resource Kit for the Uninsured – If you don’t have health coverage, this guide will
link you to all available resources.
Where can I get more help? The web-based system will be in place by July 1,
2009.
Maine’s 28 statewide Healthy Maine Partnerships (HMP’s) are leading the effort to
make Maine the healthiest state. Find your local HMP (www./////).
If you can’t access the web, HMP’s will make sure resources are available to you
in your community.
Next Steps?
Legislation will be introduced to formalize Maine’s public health infrastructure and charge it with the prevention strategy of Universal Wellness. A report card will be developed to measure progress over time. This initiative will be conducted with existing funds and lays the groundwork for new resources for Prevention and Wellness included in the Recovery Act. MaineCDC/DHHS, with the Statewide and District Coordinating Councils and HMP’S, will lead the initiative.
