What can we do to reduce underage drinking?

Support the efforts of our Law Enforcement and the Community to establish
underage drinking prevention as a shared priority.

Collaborate with Schools and local Parent and Youth groups. Work on ways to assist youth in resisting drugs and alcohol and making healthy choices.

Thank Alcohol Retailers, Restaurants and Pubs for carding underage patrons and for reducing the promotions that appeal to youth or that promote
high risk drinking behaviors.

Support local businesses in their efforts to promote a healthy workplace.
Acknowledge the good choice that youth make  by recognizing  their efforts and offer compliments and recognize the  strength of their character.

Thank you for taking the time to show youth that you care!
Underage Drinking is Not a Minor problem:

Youth who believe that alcohol is easy to get, are more likely to drink.

Youth who believe that parents or people they care about wouldn't disapprove,
are more likely to drink.

Youth who believe that they won’t get caught, are more likely to drink.

Youth who believe that there would be no consequences if they got caught
drinking, are more likely to drink.

Youth who believe that they have nothing to lose, are more likely to drink.

Is your child at risk?

Reducing substance abuse will make a healthier and safer community.

You help youth to resist alcohol and drugs when you tell them that you care
  about the choices they make.

By getting involved, you will have an opportunity to work toward positive
youth development.

Please join us in promoting healthy choices and providing youth with a safe
community & rite of passage from adolescence into adulthood.

What you can Do!

Limit Access: Know where your alcohol is and how much you have.

Be Up and Ready: Wait up or set an alarm for curfew time so you can talk with your teen. If they know you are waiting up they will be less likely to use.

Talk to other Parents: Get to know your teen's friends and their parents.

Reinforce the rules and consequences of underage drinking: Explain the reasons behind the rules and help your teen to understand that these rules are to protect them, not to restrict them.

"My teen doesn't use": Understanding that all Maine teens are at risk is an important first step in preventing underage drinking.
