Healthy Waldo County
In 2001, Waldo County General Hospital received money from the Fund for a Healthy Maine to develop one of the 32 organizations of the Healthy Maine Partnership (HMP) network. The Healthy Living Project became Waldo County’s HMP organization in 2002. For six years the goals of the project were to increase physical activity and good nutrition and decrease tobacco use.
In 2007, a collaborative effort of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Maine Office of Substance Abuse and Maine Department of Education reorganized the Healthy Maine Partnerships into health regions and changed their focus. Waldo County’s partnership, called Healthy Waldo County, focuses its approach on expanding collaboration and promoting public health and well-being for the communities of Waldo County.
Healthy Waldo County brings people together to share ideas, make plans and create and support healthy communities by:
a) sharing information and promoting training opportunities
b) hosting community meetings
c) providing technical assistance to organizations to develop health policies to promote worksite wellness
d) assessing community health status, strengths and needs
e) coordination with school district SAD #3 and RSU #20 to improve health of students and staff
In 2007, Healthy Waldo County, a comprehensive healthy community coalition was established using resources from the Fund for a Healthy Maine. Healthy Waldo County works at the local level to make Waldo County a healthier place to live and work. Healthy Waldo county represents a broad range of community life; educators, government officials, businesses, health care providers and citizens committed to making a difference in the health of our community. We do this by working together to reduce tobacco use and tobacco related chronic disease, focusing on changing policies and environments to be more supportive of decreased tobacco use and chronic disease increased physical activity, healthier eating and substance abuse prevention.
HMP is a collaborative effort among 28 local coalitions, the Maine DHHS (Maine CDC and Office of Substance Abuse) and DOE, supported primarily by the Funds for Healthy Maine with federal grants from the US CDC, SAMHSA, and DOE.
